PADI Instructor Development Course FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions about the PADI IDC

Clearing up the confusion before you even ask

Thinking about becoming a PADI dive instructor on Nusa Lembongan, Bali? You’ve probably already explored the basics like what the PADI IDC covers, how long it takes, and what the costs are. But even with all that research, it’s normal to feel a bit nervous. There are questions that don’t always get asked out loud… the ones you wonder if you’re the only person thinking about. That’s why we put this together. These are the behind-the-scenes questions we hear from people just like you, the doubts and curiosities that don’t always show up in course outlines or videos. If you want a clear, honest look at what the IDC experience is really like, this is where to start.

What’s the difference between the PADI IDC and the PADI Instructor Exam?

The IDC is the training course where you learn how to become a great instructor. The Instructor Exam (IE) is the final assessment by a PADI Examiner where you prove you can apply those skills. At Blue Corner Dive Nusa Lembongan we prepare you thoroughly for both.

It’s been a while since my Divemaster, will I be out of my depth?

Not at all. We work with plenty of candidates who’ve had a break between their Divemaster and IDC. Blue Corner Dive PADI Course Directors and PADI IDC Staff Instructors brush you up on your theory and skills during the three-day prep period before the course officially starts. We do recommend getting a head-start on revising this ahead of arriving though! You can also use your included fun dives before the IDC to get comfortable again in the water and dust off any cobwebs.

Did you know you can join the PADI IDC as a Divemaster from any of the other training organisations.

A Typical Day at a Blue Corner Dive IDC

IDC days are full and engaging, often starting early and wrapping up by late afternoon or early evening. You’ll balance teaching presentations, open water sessions, confined water sessions, and classroom theory throughout the day. There’s also downtime to relax, connect with your group, and enjoy the beautiful surroundings of Nusa Lembongan Island, Bali.

Is the PADI IDC Theory Difficult?

The IDC theory builds directly on your Divemaster knowledge. Preparing and revising before the IDC starts cuts stress over the theory and lightens the load during the course. At Blue Corner Dive Nusa Lembongan, we offer three full days of prep to refresh your skills and cover new material before diving into the main PADI IDC content. You’ll have study materials, quizzes, and plenty of support along the way..

Do I have to memorise every single PADI standard?

We show you how to navigate and use the PADI instructor manual, you are not expected you to memorise it word-for-word. Being able to find the information when you need it and understand how to apply it is what really counts. Grasping the reasons behind the rules makes you a stronger, more confident PADI instructor.

What if I’m sick and can’t do the PADI Instructor Exam?

If you’re unwell, like dealing with an ear infection or anything else that might affect your performance, you don’t have to take the PADI IE straight after the Blue Corner Dive IDC. It’s rare, but you can absolutely postpone and attend a later exam when you’re feeling better. We understand life happens, and your readiness is more important than pushing through if it’s not the right time. We’ll help you stay on track and make sure you feel confident when you do go for it.

Do I get job support after the IDC?

While our graduates move on to dive careers worldwide, we offer opportunities to shadow courses here at Blue Corner Dive Lembongan before you head out. We provide advice on positioning yourself in the job market and assist with CV preparation to help you stand out.

Will I be ready to teach after the IDC?

Absolutely! You’ll leave with practical teaching skills, confidence, and the tools to handle real students. And if you ever need guidance, Blue Corner’s team remains a resource for you.

How much diving will I do during the IDC?

Most of the IDC takes place in the classroom and pool, where you build solid teaching skills. You’ll of course get out on dives to practice teaching in the open water. We balance the schedule with diving activities like PADI AWARE Dive Against Debris and Blue Corner Conservation Coral Restoration, because great instructors remember to take time to dive for themselves too! So don’t worry! Throughout the course, and your future as an instructor, the ocean remains your office!

How much homework is involved in the PADI IDC?

The homework comes in small, manageable chunks, and many candidates actually ask for more! Doing a little bit each day keeps the workload easy to handle and helps you stay relaxed throughout the course.

Can I do the IDC part-time or remotely?

The hands-on nature of the IDC means it’s best done full-time and in person. You can prepare some theory ahead of time, but practical skills and teaching sessions need to happen onsite at Blue Corner Dive Lembongan.

Will I pass?

Yes! If you show up with commitment and the right attitude, we guarantee you’ll pass the IDC. The course is structured to give you the tools, practice, and feedback you need to succeed in this industry. If you’re struggling with any part, we’ll step in, help you improve, and make sure you’re ready before moving forward.

What if I fail the Instructor Exam?

It’s extremely rare when you’re properly prepared! At Blue Corner, we focus on making you a confident, capable PADI Scuba Instructor, not just someone who can pass a test. By the time you reach the IE, you’ll already be very well practiced, and nothing will come as a surprise. When your goal is to become a great instructor, passing the IE becomes the easy part. And if anything doesn’t go to plan, we’ll help you review, improve, and resit what’s needed.

Can I retake just parts of the Instructor Exam if I don’t pass everything?

In the unlikely event you don’t pass all sections, you can retake the parts you need within a year. We’ll guide you on what to focus on and help you prepare.

What if I’m not a confident speaker?

You don’t have to be a natural speaker to succeed. The IDC gives you plenty of opportunities to practice your briefings in an environment built to help you learn. Most candidates find their confidence grows quickly once they get comfortable with the process, structure and receive helpful feedback from our supportive team.

What should I bring to the IDC?

At Blue Corner Dive, we recommend bringing your own scuba equipment if you can, though you can rent anything you’re missing. A laptop or tablet helps massively with theory work and for convenient access to your PADI instructor manual (your new best friend!).
