Coral Restoration Training Workshop

This is a one-week workshop on restoration ecology of coral reef ecosystems. The program consists of a series of lectures and practical training sessions. During the course of the workshop students will build and install modular reef structures, as well as transplant suitable corals upon them. 

Workshop topics include:

  • Restoration Ecology & Coral Reefs

  • Assessing the need for restoration & developing a plan

  • Structure construction & physical restoration

  • Selection of donor sites

  • Harvesting of coral fragments

  • Transplantation

  • Developing a monitoring plan

Reef Health Monitoring Module

In this week-long program we will learn about several survey techniques used to monitor coral reef health. The Coral Watch Coral Health Chart to assess corals for bleaching. Make your dives count! Reef Check uses standard scientific survey techniques to monitor coral, fish and invertebrate species on a reef. We also practice several standardized survey technique used by both the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority & Nusa Penida Marine Park's long term monitoring project. Timed swims are conducted for indicator fish species, and coral cover is assessed using quadrats.

This week-long program focuses on learning all about marine life! The week starts with an in-depth "Introduction to Marine Ecology" lecture which ties in knowledge specific to the areas you will be diving in the Nusa Penida Marine Park. Each day then includes specific task-orientated diving and lectures in topics from coral health, tropical reef fish identification, and marine conservation.

Scientific Diver Program - Week 1

During this week students go through safety standards for working underwater. Topics include advanced dive planning, dive accident managment, risk assessment and use of specialized dive equipment. This week is heavy in diving theory with emphasis on decompression theory, physics and physiology of diving.

Prerequisites: Rescue Diver with 30+ logged dives and current First Aid certificate.

Scientific Diver Internship Program

Scientific Diver Internship Program

3 week Scientific Diver & Tropical Marine Ecology course offered by  marine biologist Andrew Taylor.   This is a unique program which combines multiple certificates as listed below in each week. Individual weeks can be taken separately, or all together as a single internship. Option to add-on the PADI Divemaster Course at the end of the program.

This course is designed to develop both advanced diving skills and knowledge of the marine environment.
