with PADI COURSE DIRECTOR

Cody McDonald

Cody is the co-founder of Blue Corner Dive. Cody is a PADI Course Director, Emergency First Responder Instructor Trainer, and Reef Check EcoDiver Trainer.  He began diving in 1995 in the lakes of Alberta, Canada.  The reason for jumping into this ice bath was an opportunity to go scuba diving in Malaysia with a high school trip.  The first tropical dives were on the Perhentian Islands where a little spark began.  After a first try at University Cody decided to explore South East Asia where after months of travel found “home” on Gili Trawangan completing his Advanced through Divemaster in January 2001.

Cody returned to Gili Trawangan in April 2002 to complete his PADI Instructor rating and continued to work during the high season from May – August every year on Gili Trawangan gaining lifelong friendships and experience in the dive industry.  Having this experience Cody has many contacts with in the dive community to assist with job placement throughout Indonesia.   During the low season period Cody attended the University of Alberta where he earned a  Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree and worked as a registered Nurse in Calgary for a number of years holding a variety of positions including Paediatric Intensive Care, Transport, teaching in the university and finishing his career in Palliative Home Care.

In 2010 and 2011 the dream of cofounding Blue Corner Dive was coming together with land agreements signed and site design completed in February 2011 and Blue Corner was officially opened July 1, 2011.  Blue Corner has been a pioneer in the Instructor development community here on Nusa Lembongan.  Blue Corner was the first to host a PADI Instructor course and the first to host a PADI Instructor examination on the island.  Cody became a PADI Course Director in March 2014 and was the first Resident PADI Course Director on Nusa Lembongan and has trained many of the local community to become PADI dive instructors.  Cody holds a number of other firsts as well here on the island; the First and only PADI Career Development Centre and the only Resident PADI Course Director to reach Platinum Status, Cody still holds the Platinum Course Director Status.

Cody developed the Blue Corner Philosophy of a “stress free” IDC offering courses over more days, more workshops, and more time practicing skills in the water through additional workshops over and above what is required.   Being a co-founder allows Cody this additional time to work with students and not worry about paying a contracted PADI Course Director per day.

Cody has had the opportunity to counsel and inspire a number of students who have gone on to open and continue to open successful dive businesses in the Asia Pacific Region.

Cody’s most resent mentoring accomplishment includes being able to mentor 2 additional colleagues to go on and become PADI Course Directors, now both working as Part of the Blue Corner Professional Development Team.  Rosie Dixon is the first PADI Course Director on Nusa Penida and is in charge of the Nusa Penida Professional Development Programs.  Made Partayasa is the first Balinese PADI Course Director and works full time with Cody in the Instructor Development Program at Blue Corner Dive Lembongan, helping to continue to inspire the local community to become involved in diving.

In his free time Cody enjoys traveling once or twice a year to somewhere new in Indonesia to explore the magnificent diving Indonesia has to offer.  All for gaining insight into where to encourage students to open the next great dive centre.
